Phoenix Then and Now

Ever wish you had a time machine? Well, the folks over at Thunder Bay Press were kind enough to send us one...sort of. The book, Phoenix Then and Now, takes you back in time with historic photographs of Phoenix, placed side-by-side with contemporary views of the same locations.

We really enjoyed reading this book and seeing how different locations in Phoenix have changed or stayed the same over the years.  This book would be the perfect gift or souvenir for someone that loves Phoenix.

Want to win a copy of Phoenix Then and Now? Tell us in the comments below what you love most about Phoenix - the best answer wins a copy of the book.  A winner has been chosen and the contest in now closed. Thank you to everyone who participated!

  1. I love Phoenix because it is the city of my birth! I was born in the OLD St. Joseph’s hospital. I am wondering if there are photos of it in the book.

  2. What I love about Phoenix is that for all its problems, there is a spirit of innovation and room for new voices. The establishment here is only 60 or so years old. In older cities, leadership is often entrenched across generations, blocking outsiders. It’s still possible to make your mark in Phoenix, regardless of your family name.

  3. I love Phoenix because I never, ever have to shovel snow!

  4. I love Phoenix because you can be rich or poor and still be able to enjoy the mountains the parks and all nature has to offer 365 days a year.

  5. I love Phoenix not only because I’m a second generation native, but because of the unique qualities it has. Its a metropolitan city, but its not overcrowded and over built like New York. Some of the most beautiful sunsets can be found in the valley of the sun. People here are genuine. The idea of growing with your city and watching it reach its potential is an amazing thing to do. Not to mention, the weather: no shoveling snow, no bracing for hurricanes, no horrible tornadoes, no ridiculous earthquakes. Just beautiful year round sunlight, and 3 months out there year you can live in a pool :-)

  6. If y’all want i have some pics of Rustler’s Rooste back then we’ve been here 40 years family owned and operated! This year is our 40th Birthday!!!

  7. I live in south central Pennsylvania, but my heart is in Phoenix. I first visited in 1971 and fell in love with the city. I visit almost every year…why? Because all it has to offer, the beautiful scenery and weather. From taking a Dolly Steamboat ride ,to visiting Mystery Castle,to watching a race at Canyon Speedway Park,to walking thru the Wells Fargo Museum, there always are interesting things to see and do .I am planning to move there within the year, and I cannot wait to proudily say live there,to be in awe of the city, and watch it grow even more.

  8. Thank you to everyone who entered! Andre, you are our winner! We will email you to get your information so we can send you a copy of the book. Congratulations!
